Worth Showing Up For: The Little Gym of Medway
Building confidence, community, and joy for local kids
There are some places in our community that go far beyond the activity itself. They become a place where kids grow, where families connect, and where confidence quietly begins to take shape week after week.
For many families in Medway and the surrounding towns, The Little Gym of Medway is one of those places.
Owned by parents Leah and Nigel, The Little Gym has become a welcoming space where children develop physical skills while also building confidence, resilience, and friendships along the way.
We recently sat down with Leah and Nigel to hear the story behind their gym and why showing up for kids and families is at the heart of everything they do.

How The Little Gym of Medway began
Like many parents, Leah and Nigel were searching for activities that would help their child grow not just physically, but socially and emotionally too.
At the time, their daughter was attending classes at The Little Gym of Medway and they saw firsthand how much joy it brought her.
“Watching her smile and become more social really stayed with us,” they shared.
Around that same time, the previous owners of the gym, who had lovingly run it for more than 20 years, announced they were retiring. When Leah and Nigel learned about The Little Gym’s philosophy, they felt immediately connected to the mission.
“The focus isn’t just gymnastics. It’s about building confidence, resilience, and joy through movement in a safe and supportive environment.”
Taking over the gym felt like the opportunity to continue something meaningful for local families.
“Our goal has always been to create a space where children feel safe to explore, parents feel welcomed, and families feel like they belong.”
What makes The Little Gym experience different
One thing that surprises many families is that The Little Gym is not about competition.
Instead, every class is built around what they call “Serious Fun.”
Children develop balance, coordination, strength, and motor skills, while also learning social skills, listening, patience, and perseverance.
From the moment families walk through the doors, the atmosphere is designed to feel encouraging and positive.
“You’ll see instructors cheering kids on, celebrating small wins, and helping each child progress at their own pace,” Leah and Nigel explained.
Every child grows differently, and the goal is to help each one feel successful along the way.

At The Little Gym of Medway, classes are built around “Serious Fun,” helping little ones grow through movement and encouragement.
Watching confidence grow week by week
One of the most rewarding parts of running the gym is seeing how children grow over time.
Often, a child might begin their first class feeling shy or unsure.
“The first week they might stay close to their parent,” Leah and Nigel shared.
“But the next week they try a small skill. A few weeks later they’re running across the floor with a huge smile because they just did something they didn’t think they could do.”
Another special milestone happens when children transition from parent-child classes into independent preschool classes.
Kids who once explored the gym alongside their parents begin entering the gym confidently on their own, listening to instructors, making friends, and discovering what they’re capable of.
Those small moments of courage add up to something powerful.

From first steps to new skills, kids at The Little Gym of Medway build confidence one class at a time.
The moments that make it all worth it
One moment that stayed with Leah and Nigel came from a parent whose child struggled with group activities.
After a few months at The Little Gym, that same child was excited to come to class each week, greeting instructors and classmates with confidence.
They’ve also seen something incredibly meaningful happen in their community.
Some children who once attended The Little Gym years ago have come back as instructors.
“In many ways, The Little Gym has come full circle for them,” they said.
Moments like that are a reminder that what happens in the gym can have an impact far beyond the walls of the building.
What families might not see behind the scenes
Running a children’s program requires much more preparation than many people realize.
The team spends significant time planning classes, training instructors, and designing lesson plans that help children build skills step by step while still keeping the experience fun and engaging.
Behind the scenes they are also supporting instructors, communicating with families, and making sure the gym remains a safe and welcoming environment for every child.
Why showing up matters
Like any program that serves families and young children, some days are busy and exhausting.
But what keeps Leah and Nigel motivated is seeing the impact their gym has on children and families.
“When a child finally masters a skill they’ve been working on, or when a parent tells us their child is becoming more confident at school or with friends, those moments remind us why we do this.”
Seeing kids leave class smiling and proud of themselves makes the hard work worth it.
The impact beyond the gym
While kids develop physical skills in class, Leah and Nigel hope the bigger takeaway is confidence.
They want children to leave The Little Gym believing in themselves.
They also see how important movement and social interaction are in today’s world.
“In today’s world, it’s especially important for children to balance screen time with real human interaction,” they explained.
Through play and movement, children learn to:
- wait their turn
- work with others
- build friendships
- try again when something feels difficult
These are skills that stay with them long after they leave the gym.
A message to parents with shy or cautious kids
If your child is hesitant about joining a class, you’re not alone.
Leah and Nigel hear that concern from parents often.
And interestingly, those children often thrive the most.
“Our instructors are trained to meet kids where they are,” they said.
Some children jump right in, while others take time to warm up, and both approaches are perfectly okay.
Many families begin with a trial class, simply to see how their child responds.
And often, those first small moments of confidence begin right there.
Looking ahead
What excites Leah and Nigel most about the future is continuing to grow alongside families in the community.
They are especially excited to build deeper connections with local schools, PTOs, and organizations so they can support even more families.
Every year they get to meet new children, celebrate milestones, and watch toddlers grow into confident school-aged kids.
Knowing they played even a small role in that journey makes everything worth it.
